The Macallan Story

The Macallan is a single malt Scotch whisky first distilled in 1824 at its Distillery near Easter Elchies House, at Craigellachie.

The Macallan is currently distilled and bottled by The Macallan Distillers Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Edrington Group which purchased the brand from Highland Distillers in 1999.

In 2009, The Herald (Glasgow) reported that Macallan was "the world’s third largest-selling single malt (behind Glenfiddich and Glenlivet) with over 500,000 cases a year, and second largest by value." The Scotsman published a quote from Ken Grier on August 16, 2009, stating: "We have now overcome Glenfiddich to move into the second biggest selling single malt by volume behind Glenlivet" In 2011, Edrington Group reported that prior-year sales of The Macallan were up 8% to over 700,000 cases and the BBC also reported that an office was being opened in New York to continue growth in the American market.

Since the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 came into force labelling of bottles of Scotch whisky has been regulated, and currently produced bottles of The Macallan indicate it is a Highland Single Malt. However the website for the brand indicates that "The Original and Spiritual Home" of The Macallan is Speyside, an area near Strathspey.
Originally, The Macallan was only matured in oak sherry casks brought to the distillery from Jerez, Spain. Beginning in 2004, The Macallan introduced a new main product, the Fine Oak series, with the whisky mellowed in bourbon oak casks as well as sherry ones.

Bottling
The distillery produces a number of expressions in its core Sherry Oak series, the most generally available being the 12-year-old, although the 18-year-old is widely distributed, alongside a 10-year-old cask strength expression at 58% ABV. Expensive 25- and 30-year-old versions can also be found.
More recently, starting in 2004, The Macallan for the first time started to offer single malt expressions vatted with whisky matured in used casks other than ex-sherry casks as part of the Fine Oak range. Macallan also markets special scotches in duty-free shops at airports such as the 1824 Collection.
Many rare, special releases and other small production run bottling also exist.

Publicity and Marketing

In 2010, a bottle of The Macallan 64-year-old single malt whisky in a one-of-a-kind "Lalique: Cire Perdue" crystal decanter was sold for $460,000 at an auction at Sotheby’s in New York City. All proceeds from the sale were donated to "charity: water", an organization that helps provide access to clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

GLENFIDDICH VINTAGE RESERVE 1977

As with previous years, the Glenfiddich Malt Master, David Stewart, invited a number of nosing or tasting experts from around the world to assist him in the selection of this year’s eagerly awaited Vintage Reserve.

After two hours of deliberation, the selection panel unanimously selected cask number 4414 for bottling. It was filled with new-make Glenfiddich spirit on 7th March 1977 and has spent the last 33 years imparting deep character onto the whisky.

Commenting on the single malt, David Stewart said: “The chosen cask yielded a Glenfiddich of unusually high strength for its age but one, I am sure, collectors, connoisseurs and those with discerning taste will appreciate enormously. The delicate fruity notes that are very characteristic to Glenfiddich give way to distinctive dried fruits, spicy sherried and oaky flavours, which are indicative of the 31 years spent in European oak. The selection panel can be very proud of their work.”

David Stewart’s Tasting Notes
Colour Dark amber
Nose - A rich and complex aroma with deep, sherry notes (raisins, dates, sultanas) and a beautiful oaky sweetness. Addition of a little water releases a vibrant spicy character with hints of vanilla, butterscotch and polished leather.
Taste- A wonderful balance of rich oak notes and sweet, fruity spice. Initially very intense with lots of oak tannin and mouth-coating wood flavour. After a few minutes a subtle vanilla sweetness and gentle fruity character develops (baked apple, rhubarb, ripe pears). The layers of flavour continue to unfold over a very long period meandering from oak to sweet to fruity to spicy and back again.

Finish- Very long and lingering with a warm, sweet afterglow.
ABV 54.1%, 482 70cl bottles packaged in a solid oak presentation box.

GLENFIDDICH VINTAGE RESERVE 1976

On Monday 9th July 2007, three "masters" and their "pupils" joined Glenfiddich Malt Master, David Stewart, and his apprentice Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, at The Glenfiddich Distillery to select a single cask from Warehouse 8 for bottling.
Cask number 516 was filled with new-make Glenfiddich spirit on 16th January 1976.

Over the 31 years it lay in a distillery warehouse, the European oak butt, which had formerly been used to mature Spanish sherry, has gently imparted a full and distinguished character into its contents.
On a warm summer's afternoon, the selection panel declared the aged single malt Scotch whisky worthy for bottling as a Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve.
"This Glenfiddich has matured for over 30 years in a European oak cask. It has all the hallmarks of a great Glenfiddich vintage with an additional intriguing, complex, fruity character," declared David Stewart.
ABV 51.9%; 549 70cl bottles packaged in a solid oak presentation box.

Collector's notes:Limited edition of 549 bottles; packaged in a solid oak presentation box. An elegant nose with fragrant floral (violets) notes and a hint of fresh mint. On addition of water a complex array of fruity aromas are released. Tropical fruit, pineapple, orange, apple and fresh pear. Rich golden colour. Beautifully sweet and silky smooth taste. Exotic floral notes and rich fruit, mandarin orange and ripe mango. Evolving into deep, complex, oaky flavours with a rewarding sweet glow. Finish is warming with a lingering sweetness.

GLENFIDDICH PRIVATE VINTAGES

Thanks to the foresight of William Grant, The Glenfiddich Distillery has inherited an unparalleled collection of Vintage and Rare Whiskies dating back as far as the 1930s.

Having quietly matured for many years in oak casks in the traditional dunnage warehouses at The Glenfiddich Distillery in the Highlands of Scotland, a strictly limited number of rare old casks of Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whisky are specially selected by the Malt Master for Private Vintages.
The Malt Master selects between four and six oak casks and from these the Private Vintage customer chooses which cask they would like bottled, each cask yielding around 250 bottles. All are hand bottled, labels are personalised and each bottle is individually numbered and presented in a cherry wood box.
Private Vintage casks of Glenfiddich have been bottled for a limited number of exclusive customers looking to mark a special occasion in a memorable way. The QM2's maiden voyage from Southampton to New York was celebrated with the Glenfiddich Private Vintage 1976 and a Glenfiddich Private Vintage 1965 was created to celebrate Singapore's 40th anniversary.

GLENFIDDICH 50 YEAR OLD

The Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is a product of time, of 50 years spent maturing in oak casks, its complex and sensuous flavours mellowing and smoothing over the years. But the whisky also benefits from the time our craftsmen have spent looking after it, their experiences and traditions passed down over 120 years.

Unveiled by Peter Grant Gordon at The Glenfiddich Distillery in July 2009, Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is not just a part of our history; it is our history. The first vatting was created from just nine casks, laid down between 1937 and 1939, one for each of our founder, William Grant’s children, who helped their father build The Glenfiddich Distillery by hand in 1886. This is only the second ever vatting of Glenfiddich 50 Year Old.

Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is the darkest Glenfiddich whisky, with an astonishing taste. It has a well-balanced nose, with a pleasantly sweet woody aroma. This progresses to a smooth sweet fruity flavour.

TASTING NOTES
This exquisite whisky has been drawn from two casks, both having spent the last 50 years maturing in the darkness and chill of Warehouse 8. Before bottling, David Stewart married them for six months in an American oak barrel to give the wondrous array of flavours and aromas an unrivalled harmony.
The colour of Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is golden amber.

The nose is beautifully harmonious with an uplifting, vibrant and complex aroma. Delicate floral notes (rose petals and violets) are intriguingly intertwined with green tobacco leaf and oak and just a faint hint of smoke.
The taste is initially very sweet with a zesty orange marmalade and vanilla toffee, which then cascades through a wonderful series of layers: aromatic herbs, floral and soft fruits, silky oak tannin and hints of gentle smoke.
The finish is exceptionally long with a touch of dry oak and the merest trace of peat.

"It is the most urbane Glenfiddich that I have tasted... it tells a story a little at a time, dryly, almost teasingly. It makes such good company that I am reluctant to share it."

Collector's notes:
Limited edition of 600 bottles; packaged in a hand-made oak box with a brass plaque; bottle label and tasting notes personalised with the bottle number and bottling date; each bottle is signed by Peter Gordon, the great-great-grandson of Glenfiddich distillery founder William Grant; in 2001 it won three awards: Gold Medal - International Spirit Challenge; Silver Medal - International Wine and Sprits Competition; top score (9.5 out of 10), Whisky Magazine.
